Appearances at this weekend's Arts, Beats & Eats festival in Royal Oak will be notable for a couple of Detroit bands.

Sponge is coming to the rescue after Puddle of Mudd had to drop out of its 6:45 p.m. slot Monday, Sept. 2, on the Michigan Lottery National Stage due to frontman Wes Scantlin's legal poblems. "I don't know what happened to the guy, but it's cool to play in front of MC Hammer," says Sponge frontman Vinnie Dombroski. "We've done a lot of different things like that. We've shared the stage with the Fugees. We played with Black Eyed Peas one time at some college, some really mixed-up stuff.

"It's always fun. We're pretty much up for anything."

With a new album, "Stop the Bleeding" out and radio stations picking up on the single "Come In From the Rain," Sponge is also gearing up for a special show on Sept. 13 at the Diesel Concert Lounge in Chesterfield.

Kaleido, meanwhile, is doing double-duty at Arts, Beats & Eats this year, playing at 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, on the Ford Ecoboost 89X stage and then at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, on the National stage. "It's exciting," says singer Christina Chriss. "Last year we met so many new people and made a lot of fans there that didn't know about us; they just happened to be in the right spot at the time we played. We're hoping that'll happen again this year; with two performances, the chances are better so hopefully we'll get in front of a lot more people."

Chriss says Kaleido will play different sets, though using many of the same songs. And the group will preview material it's currently recording at Pearl Sound studio in Canton, with Grammy Award-winning producer Emile Haynie working on the set from his New York base.
