Down time is not a plus for Buckcherry

Buckherry frontman Josh Todd says the band that plays together plays better together.

At least that's how he accounts for the Los Angeles hard rockers' recent output -- four albums in the last seven years and a slew of rock radio hits such as "Crazy Bitch," "Everything," Too Drunk..." and others.

"I think we managed to do it because we're always working," explains Todd, 43. "We're always on the road. We don't take a lot of time off. I think what happens with bands is they start making a lot of money, and after record cycles they get away from each other for months, and that's not good.

"I think when bands get away from each other too much they don't exercise that (creative) muscle, and that's really important. Just like everything else, practice makes perfect, and I think when you're constantly working, you just get stronger."

Buckcherry's latest release, this year's "Confessions," is certainly one of its most ambitious, a thematic work based on the Seven Deadly Sins. And Todd says all that practice and "muscle building" he mentions helped make the project work.

"It definitely does not come easy," he says. "I re-wrote some of these songs, lyrically, three and four times. Musically the guys had to go in and do a lot of stuff, and we approached songs from all different angles.

"By the end of it I didn't ever want to approach the subject again, but I'm glad we got and captured it. It was fun and challenging and great. I think anything worthwhile is gonna be a little aggravating along the way."

Buckcherry, Girl On Fire and Zug Island perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Macomb Music Theatre, 31 N. Walnut St., Mt. Clemens. Tickets are $20. Call 586-541-1107 or visit www.macombmusictheatre.com.
