On 2011's "Any Man in America," Blue October frontman Justin Furstenfeld was an angry man, venting about his divorce and what he felt was an inequitable custody arrangement for his daughter.

The new "Sway," then, couldn't help but be a happier album.

"I was in a very dark place and I let my emotions take over my work through the whole two years of ('Any Man in America')," says Furstenfeld, 37, who's since remarried and has another daughter. "There's not one sad song on ('Sway'), which is pretty amazing. It's about empowerment, confidence and peace and just stopping and being a survivor. I even poke fun at myself, so it's really quite delightful."

Furstenfeld's new attitude is evident in song titles such as "Breathe, It's Over," "Angels in Everything" and "Not Broken Anymore." He also credits his co-producer David Castell with helping to make sure "Sway" reflected his more positive mindset this time out.

"(Castell) aid to me, 'If I'm doing this album with you, it can't be more about your personal life and how hard it is, nothing about that.' I said 'Fine.' It was time to put my foot down and show people who love us there's a way up, there's light. I'm proud of 'Any Man in America' but I'm more proud of getting through it and being in a better place now.

"It's just time to have fun again. It's time to have fun on stage, We've got so many ballads and so many sad songs; now it's time to just plug it and have a good time."

Blue October, the Unlikely Candidates, Toni Vasquez and The Last Place You Look perform Friday, Sept. 20, at Saint Andrews Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $27.50. Call (313) 961-6358 or visit www.saintandrewsdetroit.com.
