At the start of Travis' new album "Where You Stand," frontman Fran Healy sings "Why did we wait so long?" -- which, after a five-year gap between albums, is a pretty fair question.

"It's the longest break Travis ever had from each other," says Healy, 40, who released a solo album, "Wreckorder," and toured during the interim. "When we moved to London in 1996 we were four very individual people sharing a band. Then 12 years pass and you're sort of merged together and you lose quite a bit of yourselves, so in the time away from each other we were able to not only catch up with our families but also ourselves.

"We didn't really give ourselves a specific date to get back to the band; we just said we will and then 'farewell' and went off to do whatever we were going to do."

Travis' return started after the group reunited for a concert in 2011, which Healy says was key to getting everyone on board for what became the decided upbeat "Where You Stand."

"We had a little band meeting where we decided that we would go and try to write some songs together and do it in a very relaxed way, without talking about albums or the business as such," Healy recalls. "We'd go into a room for a week every couple of months trying to make a song, then when we had a song we'd try to make another song and just get used to being in each other's company again.

"And that was nice because we were individuals again and everyone was able to contribute. Then when we had enough material we were like, 'Right, let's go make a record.' It was all very easy."
