It's been more than six years since David Cook was crowned the seventh season "American Idol" champion.

And thought it "feels like forever ago," Cook says that two albums later, and with a third on the way, he still has nothing but good things to say about it.

"I really loved my time with 'Idol,' and I still have amazing relationship with people behind the scenes there," says Cook, 30. "I feel somewhat removed now to the person and the performer I was on the show. I feel like I'm a different writer, a different performer.

"But it was nice. It definitely was an amazing platform. I couldn't imagine turning my back on it."

Cook did, in fact, perform his latest single, "Laying Me Low," on the show after it came out in April. He's moved to Nashville during the past year and is between record labels, but he hopes to have a new album out "fairly soon" and predicts that it will surprise those who became familiar with the earnest, soulful style he displayed on "Idol" and his subsequent releases.

"I've just enjoying the (recording) process and trying different sounds, different instrumentation and working without parameters," he says. "I want to experiment and go down roads I wouldn't have been as comfortable with in the past. I'm definitely toying around with some (electronic) programming and using loops and playing keyboards live now.

"If you'd told me I was going to do that two years ago I would've said you were nuts, but I'm loving it. And you don't want to stay in the same place if you're really an artist."

David Cook performs at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at The Ark, 316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $75. Call 734-761-1451 or visit www.theark.org.
