Pittsburgh's Rusted Root enjoyed its hometown Pirates' run to baseball's post-season playoffs for the first time in 21 years -- even if the group wasn't around to enjoy it very much.

"We were on tour pretty much the whole summer," notes frontman Michael Glabicki, who co-founded Rusted Root during 1990. "We came home for a couple days here and there and went to a few games, but we weren't able to perform as a band or be part of it like that.

"But it was pretty awesome. You just started to remember things from you childhood, back when they were good. It was really cool to watch."

Glabicki and company, meanwhile, are marking their own time now. It's been 21 years since Rusted Root's first album came out, but he says the group is hardly feeling its age. "The stuff is really fresh and spontaneous," Glabicki says. "Even playing the older tunes live, I still get off on them and I still feel like it's fresh, and I'm able to see things in a different way every night.

"And that's a lot of fun, once you build these multiple foundations of the music and a fan base that's been with you for a number of years."

Rusted Root's most recent album, "The Movement," came out in 2012. Glabicki, meanwhile, is planning to release a new solo album in 2014, which he says will be "a little more straightforward" than the band's sophisticated, polyrhythmic style.

Rusted Root and the Ben Daniels Band perform Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
