Dallas Green, aka City and Colour, has never been a big one for self-aggrandizement. In fact, the Canadian singer-songwriter has never put a picture of himself on the cover of any of his albums.

Until now.

"The Hurry and the Harm," the former Alexisonfire member's fourth studio album under the City and Colour moniker, sports an artful photo of Green, half clear and half covered with polka dots. "I guess if I was going to put a picture of myself on something, I might as well start with half of it," Green cracks. But he had definite reasons for choosing this time to break with tradition.

"I really think it's more because I haven't done anything like that before," Green, 23, explains. "I'm four records in. Alexisonfire didn't put pictures of ourselves on (the albums) either, and this is really the first record after everyone knows that I'm out of the band.

So it's just something different, something a little unexpected."

Green feels that the fuller sound of "The Hurry and the Harm" --which he recorded at historic Blackbird Studios in Nashville -- was also part of the impact of his departure from Alexisonfire, opening him to more possibilities than when he was juggling the two acts.

"I think I would've broadened the horizons of (City and Colour), anyway," Green says, "but a lot of the ideas that were presenting themselves to me this time made more sense than having them stay stripped-down, like I had before.

"So I think with the time and focus I have now, not having to worry about another whole band at the same time, I was able to expand a lot more on those ideas and try them out. Before it would be like, 'Here's a couple weeks. I'm gonna go work on my record,' this time I could really work on them and try them out in different ways, and you can hear that on this album."

City and Colour and Sleep Sun perform Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9, at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25-$45. Call 313-961-5450 or visit www.livenation.com.
