Politics fuel All That Remains' music

When Massachusetts headbangers All That Remains started making their latest album, "A War You Cannot Win," frontman and lyricist Phil Labonte found himself in an interesting position.

"I'm in a good relationship now, so the emotional kind of stuff tends to sound a little more positive than mopey -- and that's no fun," Labonte, ??, says with a laugh. "So there's not a whole lot of relationship music on this. The fact I didn't get my heart crushed since (the last album) has a big effect on what I'm singing about.

"But it is pretty political. I'm not bummed out, so I might as well complain about other stuff.

And when it comes to politics, don't expect to find Labonte anywhere in the mainstream, right or left.

"I'm Libertarian," Labonte explains. "I think we should gut Washington, gut all the state governments. As soon as you put too much power in the state or federal government you end up with one person who has money or influence and can give a good speech and sway the masses. If you have people in a position where they can vote themselves a raise, that's bad for everyone."

"Politics is so complex, and there's so much drama on both sides it just gets sickening. You can't get anything done in Washington. In my mind the whole situation just goes against the idea of being a free people, so that's given me plenty to write and sing about."

All That Remains, Motionless in White, Soil and Saint Ridley perform Friday, Dec. 6, in the Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $18.50 in advance, $20 day of show. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
