X still marks the spot for landmark punk rock

The long-lived Los Angeles punk band X spent a few nights in July playing its first four albums in their entirety. And singer-bassist John Doe says fans in other cities will benefit from that exercise.

"There`s a lot of spillover from what we did at the Roxy," says Doe, 60 (real name John Duchac). "It was very rewarding because we walked away from those four nights and realized that the band has a little more breadth and a little more depth than just getting out there and doing a two-hour punk rock show. It was good to realize, 'No, we do more.'

"So now (guitarist) Billy Zoom is playing saxophone. DJ (Bonebrake) is playing vibes, realizing that he's not just a fantastic punk rock drummer but also is a bit of a jazz vibes player. And we're seeing an audience which can be from 15 to 60 years old and can see on their faces that they're getting it, that they're having some of those 'Aha!' moments and going, 'Oh, wow, check that (stuff) out!' "

Doe adds that he and his bandmates, who came together during 1977, remain proud that X's original lineup is intact -- tough Zoom did spend a few years out of the band between 1984-93. "It gives us a feeling of accomplishment that, yeah, we lasted somehow," he notes. But the group's last album was 1993's "Hey Zeus!," and while X still tours regularly, Doe knows better than to promise any new music.

"I hope so, but you never know," he says. "Like most families, it's complicated. Exene (Cervenka) and I write songs still, together; they usually end up on my records or one of hers. We're trying to figure something out for (X), but I'm not really not sure what will happen."
