Heffron Drive gets back in gear
Kendall Schmidt had to put Heffron Drive on hold when he joined the cast of Nickelodeon's "Big Time Rush" and the band of the same name.
But with the show over and the group on ice, Schmidt has reunited with Dustin Belt -- who doubled as Big Time Rush's touring guitarist -- and put Heffron Drive in gear again, with a new album called "Happy Mistakes" and plenty of road work ahead.
"It feels like Chapter Two more than a new beginning," says Schmidt, 23, a Kansas native who has also had roles in "ER," "Frasier," "Gilmore Girls" and other TV shows. "I always envisioned keeping Heffron Drive going. I could consider this my 'solo' career, my solo jump into the world, but I still wanted to keep a band kind of thing going rather than just me, myself and I. That's what feels more natural to me.
"My life seems to unfold in a way that one thing will complement each other."
Big Time Rush is not necessarily finished, either, according to Schmidt. The TV show may be over but ideas for a movie have been discussed, and after three Top 5 albums Schmidt feels that the group still has potential to make more music.
"On the last tour we realized how much it's become our band, even though other people have created it," Schmidt explains. "So I think at some point we'll continuing doing it, at least the (concerts), because it is our band and we know there's people that like it and want to hear the music.
"But I think right now everybody is out flexing their creative muscles with other things. Carlos (Pena) is doing Latin Music and Logan (Henderson) is auditioning for all sorts of serious roles; he's always been a tremendous actor, and 'Big Time Rush' doesn't do it justice. He has the potential to be a serious contender. At some point I think we'll get back together again, and we'll see what it leads to."
