The Black Lips kiss and tell about latest album's producers

Atlanta's Black Lips recruited several producers to help the group make its seventh studio album, "Underneath the Rainbow." And bassist and co-founder Jared Swilley says the garagey rock troupe wanted each of its four collaborators to take it somewhere different.

"We just didn't want to stay recording on, like, half-inch (tape) or four-track machines the whole time," Swilley, 31, explains. "In the beginning we were real sticklers to only recording on boom boxes or four-track machines. Now we're open to really try anything and down to try whatever (the producers) thing is best. We don't want to keep recreating the exact same thing."

Among Black Lips' corps this time was Patrick Carney, drummer for the Black Keys -- a choice Swilley calls "random" rather than premeditated.

"We were staying in the same hotel in Mexico, and all the bands were hanging out in the hotel bar, just kind of having a conversation," Swilley remembers. "We've known those guys for a long time;/ our first record and their first record came out on the same label right around the same time. (Carney) said he wanted to do some recordings with us, and we said, yes, of course.

"Patrick is cool. We're friends, so it's always nice working with someone you know. It was just real relaxed, pretty casual, like a bunch of buddies hanging around. It's a hard process to describe but it worked out really well, we thought."
