Winans brothers bring it back home with new collaboration

BeBe Winans says there are good thoughts and then there are "God thoughts," and 3 Winans Brothers, his new gospel collaboration with older siblings Marvin and Carvin Winans is certainly among the latter.

"We didn't know in the beginning, but as time passed we feel it was something that was ordained," says the Detroit-born Winans, 52, who's known for his work with sister CeCe Winans and his solo recordings, as well as his syndicated radio show and appearances on Broadway in "the Color Purple."

"I believe it was something that was supposed to happen, and supposed to happen now. I analyze sometimes, and sometimes I have to stop trying to find answers of why and how and just go with what feels right. And this feels right."

Winans, who now resides in Nashville, first broached the concept two and half years ago, the first time there's even been a trio in the celebrated family's history. The brothers spent the interim dealing with logistics -- Marvin, 56, is the pastor at Perfecting Church in Detroit, while twin brother Carvin lives in Canada -- in order to record the 13-track album "Foreign Land," which comes out Sept. 30. "Let's just say I'm amazed we got it made," BeBe says.

All three Winans, who have 17 Grammy Awards between them, wrote original material for the set and produced it themselves. And while it wasn't necessarily easy to find the time to be together, the actual time in the studio went smoothly.

"You have that family element," BeBe explains. "Each member of this group can stand on his own. So whoever was in the booth recording, the other two were the producers, and whoever was in the booth knew they were under the authority of the other two. So we had a fun time in ordering each other around in the studio."

It was such a good time, BeBe adds, that he considers 3 Winans Brothers a going concern, regardless of how difficult it is to get together.

"We will tour," he promises. "We will make some more albums, and no matter what, we will enjoy and always be family. We were willing to stretch ourselves and do something different. I think we captured that on this recording, and we feel like there's a lot more to accomplish together."
