Gore Gore Girls regroup for home town return
This year's Gore Gore Girls reunion, following an eight-year hiatus, took place with little muss or drama -- just an email to frontwoman Amy Gore from drummer Alicia Washington and guitarist Marlene Hammerle, who both live in Los Angeles.
"It was on New Year's Day, and it just said, 'Gore, what's up? You want to do this 2016? Let's just play some shows,'" recalls Gore, who resides in Detroit's Cass Corridor. "I laughed out loud and just wrote back, 'Yeah, I'm in.' It seemed like a no-brainer"
The upshot is the first batch of Gore Gore Girls' shows since May of 2008, when the garage rock quartet -- whose bassist, Lianna Castillo, lives in Ypsilanti -- was promoting its third album, "Get The Gore." The group played a pair of shows in Mexico City during April, and this weekend they'll be in Lansing on Thursday, May 5, Detroit on Friday, May 6 and Chicago on Saturday, May 7.
"We never broke up. We just stopped playing," says Gore, who during the intervening years formed the group Gorvette with Nikki Corvette and also released a solo album, "In Love," in 2012. "We did over 200 shows to support the 'Get The Gore' record. I was completely burned out and exhausted and wanted to take a little break and regroup.
"Suddenly the years started going by. That's the problem when you get off the horse; You can be distracted, so all of a sudden it's eight years later."
Gore says playing as the Gore Gore Girls again has been like getting back on the proverbial bicycle. But she's not making any predictions on what will happen after this week's shows.
"We'll see," she says. "The drummer and guitar player have an early flight back to L.A. on Sunday morning; we're literally playing the show and rushing to get them to airport at, like, three in the morning. So we'll do a high five and a fist bump, and then we'll talk."
