Florence + the Machine brought its third record, "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful" more than a year ago to substantial expectations.

But that's something frontwoman Florence Welch says the British septet has learned is to be, well, expected.

"I think that's the case with any record now," Welch, 29, says by phone from England. "People were saying to me, 'Oh, the third one, that's the tough one. That's the really difficult one.' The difficult third record? What about the difficult second record, and the first one was the hardest of them all.

"So when does it ever get easy?"

Welch and company are certainly being rewarded for their efforts. Following 2011's platinum "Ceremonials," "How Big..." was the group's third consecutive No. 1 album in its homeland and first to top the Billboard 200 in the U.S. It received rave reviews, appearing on more than a few Best of 2015 lists, and, accompanied by a series of music videos dubbed "The Odyssey," unquestionably upped the Machine's star status yet again.

And that's something Welch, 29, says she's still coming to terms with.

"There's an amount of discipline I have now that I didn't used to," Welch acknowledges. "This life really takes you and moves you up and down. You have to be prepared for it because your time is not your own anymore. And my health is much more important to me when we just started. We would do a half a bottle of vodka on stage. There wasn't a sense of longevity to it. It was very much of the moment.

"And right now I think we're at a stage where hopefully there will be longevity in it, and I feel much more of a sense of responsibility to the fans, to the show. It's funny to see how we're kind of growing and becoming much more interested in our craft than in getting wasted. That's a good think -- I think."
