If they wanted to, guitarist Andre Frappier and his wife, vocalist Andrea Cole, could be spending all their time playing with some of the biggest names in pop, rap and R&B.

But these days they also want to make time to be Small Creatures.

That's the name of the "eclectic soul" group the couple -- Detroit natives who now reside in Los Angeles, where they met nearly five years ago -- have given their new group, which has released a debut album and filmed and video for the track "Colour + Shade" in Detroit this week. They're still primarily guns for hire -- Frappier most recently on the road with Ariana Grande, Cole in the studio for a who's who of artists -- they're feeling the pull to make their own music as well.

"Me and my wife were always just writing together," Frappier, who lived around the metro Detroit area, including Royal Oak and Ferndale, and in Saginaw while growing up, says by phone. "We just love music and are always working on songs together, for no reason. We weren't planning on doing anything with them, but we just started talking about, 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool to put this together and do a record,' and then we started performing.

"It was all pretty organic."

Frappier says their respective schedules and commitments to other artists made it "a challenge" to complete the album, which was mixed at Studio A Recording in Dearborn Heights. The fusion of styles made it imperative to make sure the sonic attack was accurately represented, according to the guitarist.

"We're kinda jazz heads and have eclectic tastes," Frappier explains. "We're big Motown fans, anything soulful. That's why we're going with the term 'eclectic soul;' It might sound a little cheesy, but it's really what we're about. We just love good music, and we don't care what style it's in, what language it's in. We just had a good time with exciting music we were writing."

The couple is hoping to find more time for Small Creatures in the future, though Frappier notes that, "I never know about what my schedule with other artists will be." But he and Cole are also considering a return to the Detroit area -- perhaps keeping a place in Los Angeles for professional reasons but making their home base back at home.

"We really miss it a lot, especially the music scene," Frappier says. "This is our home and four family's here and we love it. I don't want to say anything bad about L.A. musicians, but I miss Detroit and we'd love to be back here."
