The list of music reality show winners who really win is short. But Chris Young is near the top of that list.

The 2006 "Nashville Star" champ has parlayed that victory into a successful country career, with seven Top 10 albums -- the latest of which, 2017's "Losing Sleep," debuted at No. 1 -- and nine No. 1 singles, along with a few awards. No wonder, then, that the Tennessee-born Young, 33, is an arena headliner these days, with full docket well into the future...

Young says by phone that headlining arenas is "just another step up. I have a lot more control about what I get a chance to do with all of our gear and the look of the show and the flow of it. It's one of those things where there's definitely a little more pressure you overall as an artist and there's a little bit of nerves when you make leap like that, but it comes with a whole lot of perks."

Young says he's been happy with the success of the "Losing Sleep" album, whose second single, "Hangin' On," is sitting at No. 2 on the country charts. "There's nothing I would change about that record, but it's definitely a validation point when you have two songs come off and one's a No. 1 (the title track) and one looks like it's going to be. That's pretty awesome. Any time you have two songs come off a record and chart like that, it's a real validation. You always hope for that."

Young wrote "Hangin' On" "probably three or four years ago," but it was only when he began working on "Losing Sleep" that it felt like the right time to finish it. "It was one of those songs that, for whatever reason, the demo was good, not great, so we ended up picking up another song that was in the same lane for (2015's 'I'm Comin' Over;). When we got to ('Losing Sleep') I said, 'I want to throw this song back in there. I think there's something there. We have to work on it, but I think it's cool.' We had a really good day in the studio cutting that song; We changed a couple things dynamically and really made it better, and now it's a big hit."

Young acknowledges that "there's some new music I'm working on" but isn't ready to say much about it yet. "I'm writing all the time. My norm is during the day -- however, I've had occasions where I got a good idea and we just happen to have an opportunity and it's 8 o'clock at night and I get together with some guys and we write something. Right now it's early, but there's stuff coming together."

Chris Young, Dan + Shay, Morgan Evans and DeeJay Silver perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena. Tickets start at $44.50. 313-471-6611 or 313Presents.com.
