As a Grammy Award-winning producer, artist and record-company president, Don Was has accomplished a great deal during his career.

But one of the Detroit native's "greatest dreams" has been to be a radio personality, which he'll become this weekend.

The Oak Park-raised Was (nee Fagenson) launches "The Don Was Motor City Playlist" at 10 p.m. Friday, April 16, via WDET-FM (101.9). Co-hosted with Ann Delisi, the show will be "two hours of free-form music and talking," says Was, with anecdotes about the music being played and his musical adventures with the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, his own band, Was (Not Was), and so many others.

The program is modeled after shows he heard Detroit musician Bud Spangler host on WDET while he was growing up. "I wanted to be like him, a musician hosting an adventurous radio show," Was notes. The first show will include music from Leonard Cohen, Pharaoh Sanders, Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and more, he says.

"It'll be loose," Was promises, "and hopefully listeners will feel like they're spending Friday night hanging out with us, just playing records and shooting the breeze."
